A HAMSTER’S HOME
Pet stores sell metal cages in different sizes and styles. Which one you choose depends mostly on how much money you want to spend. The larger the cage, the better. Remember that a hamster needs to be able to exercise to be healthy and happy.
Materials: A metal cage with a plastic bottom pan.
Size: At least 40 x 30 x 25 cm
Top of the cage: should flip open. Bars of the cage: should run hori-zontally.
Distance between bars: 1-1.3 cm.
Bottom pan: sides at least 7 cm high.
The sides of the bottom pan should be high enough to keep most of the litter inside the cage even when the hamster burrows through it. Because hamsters are curious and like to explore the world outside their cage on their own, you have to make sure the bars of the cage are properly spaced. If the head can fit through, the rest of the body will follow.

Equipment for the hamster’s home
Apart from the cage, you will require:
- Gravity-flow drinking bottle with ball valve,
- Food bowl of glazed clay or porcelain - it won't tip over so easily,
- Sleeping house, best with removable top for easy cleaning
- Wood shavings bedding*,
- Feed rack, for hay,
- Objects for the hamster to play/exercise with and gnaw at, such as; an exercise wheel, wooden branches or twigs, a brick, cardboard roll.
*Both cedar and pine bedding can be harmful to your pet's health. Every small animal owner should be aware of the following facts that pine shavings, as well as cedar, causes liver disease in small animals.
